Michael Lux is the founder of the Student Loan Sherpa. He is licensed to practice law in the state of Indiana and currently focuses his efforts on student loan strategy and advocacy.
Becoming A Student Loan Expert
Lux started his legal career working at the Indiana Attorney General’s Office. He then spent approximately five years as a Deputy Prosecutor with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office working primarily on the Richmond Hill Explosion Case.
Trying to live on a government salary and pay off over a hundred thousand dollars in student loans made managing finances difficult. According to Lux, “I realized that unless I had a great plan, I would be living paycheck to paycheck for a very long time.”
The student loan planning provided more roadblocks than expected. “At the point I was analyzing sections of the Code of Federal Regulations, I realized two things: First, I was glad I had the legal training I do, because I never would have gotten to the bottom of my student loan situation without it. Second, figuring out student loans shouldn’t require a law degree.”
Providing Student Loan Help
The Department of Education’s website on student loans provided a nice starting point for research, but it provided very little in the way of strategy or analysis. Loan servicers, the private companies tasked with helping borrowers manage student loans, left much to be desired. Said Lux, “They should be helping borrowers apply the student loan rules to their individual circumstances, but the loan servicer quality is so low that most borrowers are lucky just to get their payments processed correctly.”
In February, 2013, The Student Loan Sherpa was created to help borrowers understand how different topics ranging from repayment plans, to tax planning, to loan consolidation all come together. Additionally, the site examines pending legislation and Department of Education policy to look at the impact it has on borrowers.
Expert Help from the Student Loan Sherpa
Lux does not take on individual clients, nor does he charge a fee for any of his services. Instead, he focuses on student loan education on the Student Loan Sherpa.
According to Lux, “The idea behind the site is to help people figure out their individual student loan situation. There is a lot of information to consider, so we try to be a resource for borrowers so that they can make the best decision based upon the available information.”
