Hello all!
My situation is kind of a reverse situation of Michael’s “Refinancing student loans from abroad” article. Basically I am a US citizen with US student loans living in Canada looking to take advantage of low interest rates and refinance my student loans. I have been to several online student loan lenders and it seems like I have to be residing in the US to qualify. In many situations I have used my parents US address, but I am not sure if it is advisable in this situation This might be a better question for an expat forum rather than a student loan forum, but has anyone had experience with this?

That is an interesting question. I haven’t personally faced this particular situation.

I suspect that few lenders will be willing to lend outside the US, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Are these federal or private student loans? Given that you are living outside the United States, this might be one circumstance where you might actually be able to negotiate better terms with your current lender. Such a move is probably a longshot, but it could be worth trying.
