I have been on IBR for the past 3 years. I have never had a problem with sending in my annual information. I submitted my annual documentation June 19 as I had until August 17. On June 21 I got notification from Navient it was received. I got several emails in July, August and this Friday stating my plan was approved.

I had to call August 26 and ask for forbearance from 8/21 to 11/21 as I am having surgery and will be out of work. It was approved and the CSR assured me it would not affect my IBR.

I now received an email stating they have “received updated information for forbearance” and I owe $22 even though August’s payment was paid and processed. All of my loans are $0 except for 1 which says $22. I worksheet of even known as I got no notification. I’m OCD and check my acct often.

I got an email this Sunday morning stating my loan will be going into full repayment soon! It would be around $1700 a month! I cannot afford that. Can they do this being I was approved for my IBR?! I have printed out every email for my records. I am wondering if it is a miscommunication as my information has not been updated yet and it is a computer generated email as it is Sunday? Current IBR plan ends this month 9/21. I am going to call Navient bur want to be prepared.

Has anyone else had any trouble like this? Any help is appreciated!

Thank You!

I’ve gotten a couple emails from my lender saying that my payment was making the huge jump to standard repayment, only to learn that it was not actually going way up. (In my case it was just the way myfedloan processed applications… these “heart attach” emails were routinely sent out)

However, I don’t think you can assume that they will get this straightened out without getting involved. The description you have here is short and to the point, this is how you should be on the phone. You make it clear that you followed every rule and made every deadline. There is an issue on the Navient end. When you call them to point out these facts, you might start by asking for a supervisor. Politely explain to the CSR that you have a number of errors that need fixed and you also want to find out how they happened so that they can be avoided going forward.

Good Luck!

Thank you! I am just stressed out ad my major surgery is in 10 days and this is causing more stress. I am also a worrier. What if they refuse fix the issues? I have never had an issue with Navient before. They’re saying my monthly payment would be around $1800-$2000 a month. I only make $2000 a month.

I will let you know the outcome. Thank you for your quick reply

Try not to get too stressed out about it. Your health is far more important and you want to be in a good place before your surgery.

Just remember, you have a right to IBR by federal law. The servicers are not perfect, but if your income dictates a certain payment, they cannot change that. All the other stuff is just a headache. It sucks to deal with, but you will be able to deal with it.

Hi Michael,

I spoke with Navient. The rep Kate was really nice. They had foxed the forbearance and apologized. She said my IBR was approved on 06/21, they just cannot disclose my new amount until 30 days before the due date- so that will be in November due to the forbearance. I will be checking my account all the time though and will follow up in Nov to make sure. She said the email was sent automated. I still have printed every email for my records just in case.

Does the information she gave you sound accurate?

Sometimes I wonder how many automated emails are sent out that were wrong. I’ve been on the receiving end of this before and it is stressful.

Sounds like you go things resolved! Congrats!
