IBR Forgivness Period

Does the IBR forgivness period begin when you entered the IBR plan or when the loan was given? I was paying off a loan for several years before entering IBR I’m getting conflicting information as to if the period of payments made prior to entering IBR count towards the 25 year forgivness period. Thanks!

Hi Kelly,

The 25 year window starts when you begin payment on an Income-Driven plan. If you were on the standard, extended or graduated repayment plan, those months will not count towards the 25 years required.
